Watch a movie!

  • Studio Movie Grill
    • $1 Children’s Movies at 11 AM Mon-Fri,  Get advance tickets online with no additional fee.
      • Check Groupon for $5 tickets for new movies too!
  • Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse
    • Each show is $1 or buy a bundle and get 10 movies for $5! Check your local theater for their early bird discounts; ours only charges $3 per ticket for the very first showing.

 

Make something fun!

  • Home Depot Kid’s Workshop
    • Build something fun on the first Saturday of each month between 9-12.
  • Lowe’s Build and Grow Workshops
    • They double up on workshops during the summer so you can do a new one every 2nd and 4th Saturday at 10 AM.
  • Michael’s Camp Creativity
    • Take an imaginary seven-week road trip from the beach to the county fair and beyond, with fun kids’ crafts at each stop. $5 per class or three classes for $12. M,W,F 10 AM- Noon
  • Michael’s Kids Club
    • Michael’s regularly schedules Saturday afternoon crafting events for $2 with all supplies included.
  • Lakeshore Learning Crafts
    • Free crafts for kids every Saturday 11 AM-3Pm.  Ages 3 and up. Some stores have events on Sundays as well.

 

Get active!

  • Kids Bowl Free
    • Registered kids receive two free games of bowling every day all summer long!  Registration is free.
  • AMF
    • Kids get to bowl three games free all summer long from May 23rd-September 5th.  Register at the link above.
  • Kids Skate Free
    • Sign up at a participating skating rink and KidsSkateFree will email you passes each week which can be used during the rink’s available days.  For instance, I clicked on a rink in Austin, TX and it has free skating on Tuesdays and Fridays 3-6PM.  *May not include skate rental.

 

 

Grow your brain!

  • Apple Camps
    • Kids ages 8-12 can learn to make movies by storyboarding ideas, shooting video, and creating an original soundtrack. Or, starting this summer, campers can create interactive books complete with their own illustrations and sound effects.  Free!
  • Barnes and Noble Summer Reading
    • Earn a free book by reading 8 books and recording them in your reading journal.
  • Scholastic Summer Challenge
    • This one is geared more for public-schooled kids as the grand prize is for a school, but any kid can participate and enter their log for a chance at weekly prizes.
  • Book Adventure
    • Kids in grades K-8 can search for books, read them offline, come back to quiz on what they’ve read, and earn prizes for their reading success.
  • Half Price Books Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program
    • Kids 8th grade and under can earn $5 Bookworms Bucks per month by reading at least 300 minutes and logging it.  High schoolers can get Bookworm bucks by reading a book each month and writing a short review.  Turn your logs/reviews into HPB for $5 in Bookworms bucks!
  • TD Bank Summer Reading
    • Read 10+ books this summer and TD Banks will add $10 to a new or existing Young Saver account!
  • Target Community Events
    • Check your location for free museum days and more, courtesy of Target.
  • Dallas Museum of Art
    • General admission is free every day! Create art with some of the fun events they have lined up this summer.
  • Visit your reciprocal museums.
    • Do you have a membership to the local zoo or museum? Most have reciprocal museums that will give you free or reduced discounts.  For instance, if you are a Perot Family Plus Member,  you can visit the Fort Worth Museum of Science or Heard museum free. All Perot members can make a drive to one of the participating ASTC museums and get in free.
  • Bank of America/Merrill Lynch Free Museum Admissions
    • Bank members can enjoy free access to more than 150 of the most popular cultural institutions in the United States free of charge on the first full weekend of every month.
  • Check your local library!
    • They often offer great reading programs and events through the summer.

Do something fun!

  • Bass Pro Shops Summer Camp
    • Free crafts and activities all summer long! Check them out T/Th at noon or Sat/Sun at noon.  They also have opportunities to earn badges for scouts.
  • American Girl Events
    • Check your local American Girl store for events.  Dallas has a free Discover Truly Me event where girls get to make a bookmark, discover new books, and get a free Truly Me tee for their doll.

Go on an adventure!

  • Free National Park Days
    • Visit a national park near you on their free-entry days.  Most parks offer free entry year round.
  • Go geocaching!
    • Take your kids on a real live treasure hunt!  All you need is a smart phone or GPS device.  Download the app and go.
  • Visit your local zoo
    • Dallas Zoo offers $1 days (usually in July) where entry, snacks, and more are all $1!
  • Go hiking!
    • Look up trails near you for biking or hiking and go have fun in nature.
  • Visit a farmer’s market.
    • Besides finding yummy, healthy food, farmer’s markets often have live music and other fun activities.
  • Pick your own fruit!
    • Check out PickYourOwn to find local places where you can pick your own fruit, veggies, and even flowers. We love Blueberry Hill!
